Network Specialist 3rd Line

Purpose:

  • Provide third level Network support (LAN and WAN)
  • Research, plan and design the LAN and WAN environment
  • Oversees the implementation of the changes in LAN and WAN
  • Monitor security, capacity and performance of the LAN and WAN and recommend changes as necessary
  • Assesses available technology, presents systems solutions, and provides technical guidance to team members within one or more specific application areas & projects requiring network connectivity

Skill Sets Required:

  • Very good understanding of the modern telecommunications concepts and facilities.
    • Standards and specifications, such as IEEE802.3, IEEE802.5, IEEE802.2, IEEE802.10, IPv4, IPv6,
    • Interfaces and signaling, such as Token Ring, Ethernet, Async/Sync Serial, V.35, HSSI, ATM, SONET, Frame-Relay, H323 and ISDN
    • Physical and Link-Level protocols, such as HDLC, SDLC, SDLLC, CDP

  • Proficiency in the TCP/IP and IPX protocol suite and architecture, including the detailed knowledge of key performance metrics for specific protocols in a mixed NETBIOS, SNA and IP environment:
    • Expert in routing protocols, including OSPF, EIGRP, IGRP, RIP and security and encryption of routing protocols, Link states, summarization and adjacency
    • Expert in all bridging protocols, including RSRB, SRB, Translational Bridging and DLSW encapsulation
    • Expert in VLAN and VLAN routing
    • Expert in routable (IP, IPX) and non-routable (NetBEUI, SNA) transport protocols
    • Expert in IP and IPX addressing
    • Expert in QoS parameter tuning
    • Expert with access lists to implement security for all supported protocols

  • Expert in the networking products used
    • Hands-on working knowledge of Cisco routers and switches
    • SONET, Transparent LAN bridging over MAN and WAN, MPLS
    • IBM mainframe concepts, such as DLSW+, SNA, SDLLC. (PUs and LUs, session setup and bind problems), 4702 and 3174 controllers.
    • TN 3270 protocols and products, configuration, implementation and support of gateways, emulators, Cisco CIP.
    • Good understanding of DNS, WINS, DHCP, BOOTP, VoIP and their use and application in a routed environment
    • Novell IPX/SPX networks and configuration on routers

  • Expert with typical H/W and S/W application platforms connected to the network, with special emphasis on instrumentation for performance monitoring that can be used to troubleshoot application problems and to advise on server and workstation hardware, software and applications issues that may be affecting the network.

  • Expert in commercial and open source monitoring and performance analysis tools
    • Expert understanding of snmp, MIB, RMON, SFLOW, NETFLOW, WMI, JMX monitoring standards
    • Hands-on experience in unix system administration
    • Proficient with Perl , html, xml, etc

  • Excellent knowledge of low-level troubleshooting concepts and skills
    • Excellent knowledge of efficient problem-solving methodology when troubleshooting and documenting inter-network problems
    • Identify and use Cisco IOS commands and debug utilities to filter, capture and display protocol traffic flows to aid in problem resolution
    • Expert with network diagnostic tools, such as Sniffers, Scopes and Analyzers. VTAM and NCP traces.
    • Identify the steps to isolate complex issues and solve network problems
    • Expert in using the Cisco information resources to assist troubleshooting process, like CCO, TAC. Etc.

  • Knowledge of the SNA protocol suite and architecture
    • Sub-area networking
    • SNA-over-LAN concepts and protocols

  • Knowledge of ITIL concepts and terminology

  • Knowledge of compliance requirements for network infrastructure as related to

  • Expert in managing network perimeter security
    • Configuring firewalls and ACLs
    • Analysis and interpretation of firewall logs and Sniffer traces
    • Audit of network design and equipment configuration

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Provide level 3 support of WAN and LAN-related network performance problems
  • Working with the Network Architect conduct technology research in the area of network monitoring, security, performance analysis and reporting
  • Conduct evaluations and tests/pilots of the monitoring tools and facilities in order to provide the secure high-performance networking infrastructure
  • Act as a senior consultant to project teams/users in the analysis of business requirements and the selection of technical solutions for large or unique projects requiring network monitoring
  • Design and oversee implementation of LAN and WAN monitoring infrastructure using appropriate combination of hardware, software and facilities
  • Create and maintain all necessary network documentation (configuration, topology diagrams, addressing and device connectivity and configuration details, etc.)
  • Ensure the currency of all network-monitoring environments - review and update as necessary
  • Maintain and test network contingency plans and disaster recovery procedures for network monitoring systems
  • Provide capacity planning and performance monitoring of all network facilities, in co-ordination with the Network Architect, to ensure the efficient and optimal use of all network resources
  • Conduct an on-going analysis of the network availability and error statistics and schedule preventive maintenance, as required

Position Requirements:

  • University degree in Computer Science or Engineering and related work experience in computers and networking (6-8 years), Cisco CCNP, CCDA and on track to write the CCIE
  • Good knowledge of network monitoring technologies, both at the architecture and technical levels, as related to mainframe, LAN and WAN environments
  • Understanding of all aspects of information technology

  • Ability to document owns work for the benefit of peers and management
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Team player, self-motivated, able to work independently with minimal supervision
