SQL DBA

Our client is seeking a motivated, energetic individual to provide Microsoft SQL Server DBA support and development services at a senior level.

Technical Requirements:

  • 10+ years experience in implementation, configuration, upgrades and administration of SQL Server 2000 on WinNT/2000/2003 platforms.
  • Expert working knowledge of SQL Server internals, DTS imports/exports, SQL Server complete, differential, and transaction log backups, DBCC and SQL-DMO
  • Experience with Perl, Apache, Perl CGI coding, CVS, ViewCVS, TortoiseCVS an asset.
  • Working experience with 3rd party database tools.
  • Experience working with WindowsScriptHost (WSH) and VB scripting.
  • Experience with Veritas Backup Exec, and NetBackup backup/recovery software.
  • Strong systems architecture and design skills a definite asset.
  • Project management skills an asset.

Personal Requirements:

  • Strong interpersonal, analytical and technical troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • A proven ability to lead and direct development teams during complex systems development is essential.
  • Self starter with an ability and willingness to seek out improvements in process, systems and data storage.

Job Description:

  • Responsible for maintaining defined data to day operating procedures for SQL Server databases.
  • Support development effort by providing Transact-SQL statement tuning, and optimum data loading techniques.
  • Troubleshoot database problems as required.
  • Setup and maintain procedures to refresh databases environments using DTS and replication.
  • Provide database support through 3rd party database tools.
  • Planning, installing, and upgrading SQL Server binaries and instances.
  • Allocating system storage for optimum I/O.
  • Provide planning for future storage requirements for SQL Server databases.
  • Providing and implementing optimum physical database design.
  • Providing schema management for objects such tables, views, indexes etc and ensuring they met internal database standards.
  • Modifying database structures based on directives from co-workers.
  • Enrolling users and maintaining system security; account management.
  • Ensuring compliance with SQL Server License agreements.
  • Controlling and monitoring user access to the database.
  • Provide performance monitoring and tuning.
  • Plan/rehearse database recovery plans.
  • Configuring/troubleshooting SQL Server Client Network Utility communication software.
  • Evaluation/enforcement of database requirements w.r.t service level agreements ("SLAs") for each supported application.
  • Responsible for developing/co-ordinating/supporting system implementation notices for "SLA" impacted database changes.
  • A clear, strong communicator with the ability to describe complex problems and advocate for problem resolution through our partners and vendors.

Education/Certification:

  • University degree or diploma in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 5+ years of relevant work experience in a Senior SQL Server DBA role.
  • Microsoft MCSE certification is an asset.
  • Oracle certification a definite asset.
